Have you driven to Akaroa Head before?
It is a journey through some of the most picturesque landscapes New Zealand has to offer. Starting in Akaroa village, the route takes you along winding roads that hug the coastline, offering sweeping views of Akaroa Harbour and the surrounding hills.
Highlights Along the Way:
Harbour Views: As you ascend, the shimmering blue waters of Akaroa Harbour stretch out below, framed by lush greenery and rugged hillsides.
Rolling Farmland: The road passes through peaceful farmland dotted with grazing sheep and cattle, a quintessentially Kiwi landscape.
Native Bush: Enjoy pockets of native bush, where you might spot local birds like fantails and bellbirds flitting through the trees.
Panoramic Lookouts: Several pull-off points provide breathtaking vistas—perfect for a quick photo or a moment of quiet reflection.
Wildlife : keep your eyes open, and you might spot some seabirds, including black-backed gulls, terns, little blue penguins, or even albatross during the summer months , Hector's dolphins on the water (look for the rounded dorsal fin), and finally walk down the track on the left to spot some seals playing in the water
Akaroa Head Itself:
At the end of the drive, you’ll reach Akaroa Head, where the harbour meets the open Pacific Ocean. The dramatic cliffs and rugged coastline are awe-inspiring, with waves crashing against the rocks below. The area is rich in history, as it’s home to the Akaroa Lighthouse and remnants of early Maori and European settlements.

Grade: The road is narrow and unsealed in parts as you get closer to the head, so take your time and drive cautiously. Once you reach the parking area near Akaroa Head, there’s a short walk to reach the viewpoint and explore the area where you can see seals and enjoy the dramatic coastal scenery
